OVERVIEW

The Project Designer/Engineer is a key technical role supporting lighting system design, project documentation, controls integration, and cross-functional coordination. This position contributes through both pre-sale and post-sale phases to ensure accurate scoping, smooth production handoff, and successful commissioning. Projects span commercial sites, sports complexes, architectural environments, and custom integrated solutions. The role serves as a technical bridge between engineering, sales, manufacturing, and field support.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Lighting & Controls Layouts

  • Develop lighting and photometric designs across sports, commercial, municipal, and architectural applications.

  • Build fixture/pole configurations, crossarm details, aiming plans, and installation diagrams.

  • Create controls layouts and wiring diagrams for low-voltage, DMX, wireless mesh, and WiLLcloud® systems.

Project Documentation & BOM Development

  • Produce complete BOMs, drawings, submittals, cut sheets, and installation details.

  • Ensure all technical requirements are captured prior to production handoff.

Pre-Sale & Post-Sale Support

  • Assist pre-sale engineering with designs, specs, and technical questions.

  • Support post-sale execution, documentation, commissioning activities, and coordination with operations.

  • Participate in project handoffs, customer calls, and occasional site visits.

Sports Lighting Standards & Library Management

  • Maintain standard design assets: field layouts, aiming templates, photometric models, mounting details, controls diagrams, and BOM templates.

  • Ensure compliance with IES, NFHS, NCAA, and other governing standards.

Sales Team Technical Collaboration

  • Train internal/external sales teams on product specs, system capabilities, controls workflows, and design best practices.

  • Help develop training guides, reference materials, and design playbooks.

Technical Knowledge & Continuous Improvement

  • Stay current on lighting technologies, controls, codes, and industry standards.

  • Coordinate with Product Engineering/Management on updates and custom solutions.

  • Provide field-based feedback to drive product and system improvements.

On-Site Support, RMA & Troubleshooting

  • Provide remote and on-site support for complex installations, commissioning, and system checks.

  • Assist with troubleshooting and evaluating warranty/RMA cases; document findings and lessons learned.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Serve as a technical resource for sales, engineering, production, quoting, scheduling, and customer service.

  • Help refine workflows, templates, and design standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Technical degree, certificate, or coursework in design, engineering, or equivalent experience. Candidates who completed CAD or engineering courses in high school are a great fit if they bring strong aptitude, curiosity, and hands-on experience.

  • Proficiency with CAD tools (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent).

  • Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to juggle multiple projects; willingness to travel occasionally.

Preferred

  • Experience with lighting design software (Visual, AGi32).

  • Familiarity with sports lighting standards (IES, NFHS, NCAA).

  • Experience with lighting controls (DMX, 0–10V, wireless mesh, WiLLcloud®).

  • Exposure to commissioning, field service, or manufacturing workflows.

KEY TRAITS FOR SUCCESS

  • Curiosity and strong technical understanding.

  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing project needs.

  • Willingness to step into evolving roles as needed.

  • Clear communicator who can simplify complex topics.

  • Collaborative mindset; thrives in cross-functional environments.

  • Balances design work, problem-solving, customer interaction, and occasional field work.
